Martha Stewart knows what she’s doing in the kitchen and has the chops to prepare fancy meals that take hours. But she also has no qualms about sharing tips and tricks for shortcuts and getting meals on the table more quickly—like her go-to, four-ingredient, “lazy girl” meal, cacio e pepe.
She’s taught us how to create fluffy baked potatoes with one simple move and how to thicken soups and stews using rolled oats. She also knows the versatility of frozen puff pastry and uses the pastry dough to create elevated three-ingredient pigs in a blanket.
Martha recently shared another simple recipe on Instagram that uses puff pastry to create a two-ingredient breakfast, and we’re wondering why we’ve never thought of pulling this genius move with the frozen dough.
Martha Stewart’s Puff Pastry Waffles, Aka Puffles
We're already familiar with putting puff pastry in the waffle maker to create a simple Puff Pastry Waffle, but Martha goes one step further and fills the puff pastry with chocolate hazelnut spread and seals the edges before waffling it. That got our attention. Yum!
Martha takes it further in her post by using a cookie cutter to create a heart shape before waffling, but you could make waffles out of the two-ingredient recipe without using a cookie cutter. Once the "puffles" are cooked, she tops them with strawberries and maple syrup.
Options for Puff Pastry Waffle Fillings
In the Instagram post, Martha suggests filling the puffles with chopped fruit, peanut butter, or dulce de leche, which all sound delicious. We have some additional yummy suggestions using this super smart, quick method.
- To create a fast dessert, fill the puff pastry with warm pie filling such as apple or blueberry. After they're cooked, top with vanilla ice cream.
- Borrowing from the upside-down pastry trend, fill the puff pastry with apple, brie, and fig jam before waffling it.
- Fill the pastry with your favorite grilled cheese fillings, brush the outside of the pastry with melted butter, and make a grilled cheese puffle.
- Add simple Margherita pizza fillings—pizza sauce, mozzarella, Parm, and some torn basil leaves—between the layers of puff pastry.
Thanks to Martha Stewart's genius inspiration, you're bound to come up with dozens of other fillings you can puffle up quickly.
