The Tachinidae are a very diverse and ecologically important family of parasitoid flies, with over 10,000 described species worldwide. They are second only to parasitic wasps in diversity and ecological importance as invertebrate parasitoids. Despite this, very little is known about the ecology, biology, and behaviour of the vast majority of tachinid species.
Tachinidae usually lack the piercing ovipositor that parasitoid wasps do, so they lay their eggs onto the surface or near their prey, after which the hatched larva gain entry to the host. The host is often killed as a result.
